Rosa Louise McCauley Parks, the "First Lady of Civil Rights". Best known for refusing to relinquish her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama to a white passenger and inspiring the Montgomery Bus Boycott, her career in fighting for social equality spread far beyond Montgomery. In Detroit she served as a secretary to John Conyers, an African American US Representative and was active in the Black Power Movement. Upon her death in 2005, she was the first and only woman thus far to “lie in honor” in the Capitol Rotunda and one of only 4 private citizens to ever receive the honor of lying in the Capitol Rotunda.
