On October 16th 1968 Tommie Smith and John Carlos participated in what is regarded as the most overtly political statement in the history of the modern Olympics. After medalling gold and bronze respectively, the two took the podium inspired by the arguments of Harry Edwards the founder of the Olympic Project for Human Rights. You probably remember the fists raised, covered in black gloves but they also accepted their medals shoeless, in black socks to represent black poverty. Smith in a black scarf to represent black pride and Carlos with is tracksuit unzipped and a necklace of beads for the individuals who had been "lynched, or killed and that no-one said a prayer for, that were hung and tarred."
